First Drafts of Workshop

This is the beginning of the Design Comet's workshop proposal to bring to the community. The Comet encourages faeries to watch the design process through this blog. As designs designs come forward, the Comet will seek feedback in face-to-face meetings, conference calls, and web events. The goal is to complete this structure as soon as possible, perhaps by Lammas. Timber framing workshops will be offered for faeries to learn and improve their skills to further prepare to build the dining hall. 

The workshop is a 20x30 foot space that will sit on the corner by the propane tank. This space is designed for tool and machinery storage (like in the Shit Shed and black tool box) and for 2-4 faeries to be able to timber frame indoors. There would be large garage-type doors on the gable end facing the road to facilitate loading timbers in and out. The interior will mostly be an open design with running counters and shelving throughout.

The timber frame shell will have 8-10 foot upright posts on the first floor. The height at the peak is 20 feet. The upper level would be for storage and include a "down-low" bedroom (to avoid permitting the building for residence). The building will be on a concrete slab with consideration for possible radiant heat in the floor or at minimum a wood-burning stove. A tiny deck could face Noisy Bottoms on the upper level.

The workshop will be winter-hardy with the working plan to use structurally insulated plywood (SIP) panels for the sheathing.  Since it is on a concrete slab, strawbale walls could be used for high insulation. But the inner walls would require sheathing in order to build shelving onto them. Hence, the decision is to go with SIP. 

Portions of the roof could utilize clear or opaque panels to increase light into the space. The long side of the building will face south in solar panels were to be installed on the roof.

Call to Board the Design Comet: Workshop Edition

The Design Comet met in phone conference last week to discuss the Workshop plans. This blog will report back those plans. Feedback is encouraged. The Comet will come up with design proposals for the Workshop and present these back to the larger circle for feedback in meetings, gatherings, social meeting, and phone conference. The timeline of the project will soon be articulated. The Comet hopes to develop designs and implement a plan as soon as possible.

Summary: A 20x30 foot timber frame workshop with structural insulated panel shell and skylights is proposed. It would sit adjacent to the propane tank facing south on the corner at the top of the Septic Drive in Noisy Bottoms.  It would provide tool and machinery storage, work space for 2-3 faeries to timber frame,  with wall storage, shelves, perimeter counter space. The  step-on to work exclusively on the Workshop Comet closes at the Annual Meeting April 14th. Please e-mail to board. Currently, Doxie, Scobes, Feel Free, Matt, Ariel, and Daisy are committing to work on the Comet until the Workshop is opened, hopefully by early to mid-summer. Conference calls typically happen every two weeks. All skills level welcome.

The Comet endeavors to work quickly and efficiently at organizing for this very utilitarian structure. The funding is in-hand through a generous Destiny faerie. The Comet recommends the previous model of organizing around design and building. The Comet will have a limited lifespan, limited work focus, and short timeline. If you have interest in the process, the design, the facilitation, please become involved with the Comet. There will be a community feedback period with a viewing and editing process built in. Once the design decisions are made and agreed upon, the Comet will “Top” the project and facilitate it to completion. As such, the design and feedback time will be discrete and clear. The actual building process will be facilitated by the Comet with built-in workshops for skills-building in timber frame technique.

The Act 250 Map

 This is a map submitted to Act 250 Board in 2004. This was prior to clearing Noisy Bottoms which organically changed where cabins would sit for better light.  

Placement of buildings at Destiny has become more apparent as faeries occupy the space more. One clear notion is that all future building should be focused directly on the driveway for winter ease and every building should be winterized.  

As the Design Comet starts to plan for the Workshop, for which we have funding, this map will need to be updated with the Act 250 Board prior to beginning.  

 This is a schemata that Sammy drew in 2014 which located the Workshop differently to provide better access off the main driveway.

The Act 250 Board is a collaborative environmental oversight board over corporate development in Vermont. Since Destiny is registered as a corporation with a "3-season campground," we must follow the same permitting process as other businesses.

This is the draft map the Design Comet will work from to submit to Act 250 prior to initiating the Workshop building this summer.

As the Design Comet and Land Use continue to plan for year-round residency, this map will be considered and locations firmed up to present to Act 250 over the next few months. Conversations to be initiated will include 1) necessary Phase 2 processes of development for full-time residency, 2) what easements of the property would be necessary for deer yard protection once we start plowing the current road of snow, and 3) how many people could gather on the property during the winter months without changing any of the currently planned infrastructure?

Phase 1 of our development is related to the Campground. All the buildings on the Phase 1 plan would remain on the plan, they are just moved to be more efficient wintertime locations, and part of Phase 2 Residence development. No additional buildings would be necessary for wintertime residence at this time that haven't previously been considered by the board. These remaining cabins would need to be built to meet winter resident coding requirements.
